How and Why is Destiny as a game and service.
The reason that Destiny has been so popular as a Live service model is because it is unique in the MMO/live service space.
Yes.
It is a shooter and there are many shooters (MW, Fortnite, Apex....etc)
It is a gear grinder...where almost all MMO/Live service games are gear grinders.
But what I think has brought Destiny it's staying power has been Bungies commitment to Lore, world building, and story telling.
As someone who's itchy bits are scratched by Single player, narrative driven experiences and exploration I've always loved and admired how Destiny has baked the "how and why is this world" into the very design of each area put together. With no dialogue, no explanation, no narrative handholding, just exploring the cosmodrome you knew that the Fallen where scavengers and the Hive where creepy buggy critters each with goals showcased by the areas you encountered them in.
And it's this commitment to world depth that has me combing over each new area and bit of content as it drops and why I am fully behind the doubling down on story telling and narrative that Bungie has done since shaking activision.
Outside of the more cerebral aspects it scratches that bit of lizard brain that likes fast paced pew pew, which is the core of the game that so many games with staying power tend to.
Then there's the academic in me that is just fascinated by the growth and development of the game and community, and how it makes me consider the trajectory of our real world humanity.
I mean, going back to the Cosmodrome, players find themselves in a space where people where evacuating earth to avoid immanent global disaster. The classic starting point being amongst wreckage of panicked masses that never made it to the ships attempting to escape earth. Then, the player, making their way into the abandoned shipyards and infrastructure that facilitated escape for those lucky few.
In the real world I wonder, what unifying factor would or does the global community need to make such huge strides in a singular direction.
To what scale and how would such things be achieved with modern technologies?
I look at the state of modern gaming and space exploration and all I can think is that Much of our exploration and mining will be done by drones, controlled in VR rather than boots on the ground as so many of the hard science fiction riders have prophesized.
...
but anyway, raid goes live in a couple of days and I've got some prep to finish before hand.
Stay safe out there.
