Playing is fun.
Running a game is work.
For every hour at the table you've about 10 of homework to do.
For example.
Reading the handbook.
Then, reading the what ever associated guides you need for setting and npcs.
Then reading the handbook again to mark important rules information, pictures, or flavor text relevant to the session you're planning.
Then going back over your notes to make sure you've got everything you need.
Then staging everything in order of importance and/or difficulty.
Then finding the right terrain to help give the table depth and perspective for the players.
Then going back over your notes to make sure you have answers ready to any questions that might be asked with answers that keep the conversation directed towards the end goal.
Then making sure you've included enough plot hooks and focus time for each character to feel natural and each player understanding their role in the situation.
Then putting together prep sheets and notes for each of the players.
Then going over your notes to make sure everything is in order.
Then try to eat and drink enough you won't be hangry or tired at the end of the session.
